On Tuesday evening our 1st XI hockey squad travelled to Bristol to compete against Clifton High for the Challenge shield in the historic fixtures’ centenary year.
Having won last years’ fixture 3-0 the girls were desperate to bring home the shield once more, and didn’t disappoint as they produced a fantastic performance to win 4-0 (Haynes 2, Clifford-Ward, Hudson). The girls started well, but despite creating numerous chances Clifton High held firm in defence and it wasn’t until the final minute of the first half that Sarah Haynes finally broke the deadlock with a well taken finish to beat the keeper. Laura Clifford-Ward (VC) added the second just minutes into the second half as the girls started to find their stride, before Sarah Haynes added her second and the teams’ third and Ellie Hudson rounded off the scoring with a brilliant drag flick from a penalty corner. It was another fantastic team performance from this squad, and the girls were deservedly delighted at the final whistle.
With six of the squad making their challenge shield debuts, and a range of yr9, 10, 11 and 13 girls on the pitch, it was fantastic to see the girls so dominant once more in what has historically been a very tightly contested 1st XI fixture.
That makes it three in a row now… here’s hoping this run will continue for many years to come!
