Regional Netball Tournament, Saturday 26th January. Our U16s were drawn in a tough group with 4 schools who were placed first in their County. Our strong start against Farmors school winning 13-5 continued into the next game against Penryn where our shooters really found their rhythm to achieve a high scoring victory 19-9. We then faced two tough challenges; Millfield who are always strong and our nemesis from last year, Marlborough College. The squad worked hard in both games and came away with two well-earned victories beating Millfield 11-7 and Marlborough College 13-11.
The next game against Talbot Heath presented a new challenge against strong opposition, our girls fell behind and had to fight to get back in the game. The Royal High School girls dug deep to come back and beat Talbot Heath 15-13. Our final game was against St Peters C of E school where we secured a comfortable 14-7 victory meaning that we had won our group earning 30 points, the maximum possible in the group stages and a place in the semi-finals.
Our success meant we played second-placed Taunton from the other group with the winners of each semi-final then going through to the National Finals. We were 14 minutes away from achieving our goal. We started well, if a little cautiously, however, the game was just too close to call and it all came down to which squad could handle the pressure. Unfortunately we made a few errors and when the final whistle blew we had lost 8-9.
The crashing disappointment for everyone of not achieving our goal of progressing to Nationals must not over shadow the incredible performances throughout the day. It was a very proud day for the Royal High School. The ten girls could not have represented their school with more commitment, professionalism, enthusiasm, talent or joy. The whole team was a credit to the school and conducted themselves impeccably.
A huge thanks must also go out to the many parents who battled the miserable conditions and who whooped and cheered all day encouraging the squad to all of their successes.
The Royal High U16 Netball squad; Lauren Morgan, Phoebe Aisher (Captain), Florrie Welch, Skye Bayley, Poppy Newman, Ellie Mount, Tabby Gallen, Mia Regan (Vice Captain), Katie Stubbs, Tatiana Squire.
