Last week I was lucky to have the opportunity to attend a Phenomenal Woman event at the Gainsborough Hotel in Bath with Mrs Williams.
The event started with refreshments and networking, and then Professor Carole Mundell who is the Head of Physics at the University of Bath gave us a speech about the workplaces, experiences and challenges that led her to success. I was very impressed with what she said: “People shouldn’t just expect one path to succeed, opportunities are always around and we need to jump into different areas and try new things.’’
When Mrs Williams and I were talking with her after her talk, she also said that there are fewer girls in the discipline of physics compared to boys. She encouraged me to keep studying physics and to hold my own ideas. I was infected with her love of her profession and she has definitely inspired my thinking about my future plans.
After Professor Mundell’s there was a very interesting presentation from Dr Harriet Shortt, Associate Professor in Organisation Studies at the University of Western England about dress and how it affects the materiality of our identities in the workplace. After the there was an opportunity to eat some delicious canapés and do some more networking, which was a good opportunity to meet new people and improve my social skills.
