Girls at the Royal High School in Bath have scored more A* grades in this year’s A level examinations than last year despite 2018 seeing the vast majority of the new tougher A levels examined for the first time.
The top A* grade was scored in nearly a fifth of the exams (18.2%) taken by students at the all-girls Lansdown school, part of the Girls’ Day School Trust, while 91.7% of the exams taken achieved A*-C grades, also up on last year (*including IB equivalent).
More than half of the A level exams taken (53%) were awarded A*-A grades.
All of the school’s Oxbridge candidates secured their places with their fellow students securing places at other leading Russell Group universities thanks to some outstanding individual performances.
One in five girls scored all As and A*s in their A levels including twins Charlotte and Sophie Churchill, 18, from Bath who scored a string of A*-A grades (Charlotte – two A* grades in Greek and Latin and A in Maths and Sophie – 3 As in English, French and Spanish). Charlotte will study Classics at Exeter while her twin will study French and Spanish at King’s College, London.
Coco Vercoe, 18, from Bath achieved 3 A* grades in Chemistry, Maths and Further Maths and 1 A in Music and will now go on to Cambridge University to read Natural Sciences.
The school’s stellar performance in STEM subjects continued with Minnie Karanjavala from Bath who scored the very top A* grades in Chemistry, Physics and Maths, securing her place at Oxford to read Engineering.
Minnie has previously won a national Arkwright Engineering Scholarship and taken part in a Bath University engineering project.
Maths was the most popular subject taken by Royal High School girls with more than four in ten (43%) of them taking the subject at A level and an impressive 72% scoring A*-A grades.

‘Our staff have worked hard to steer our girls through the changes in the system and ensure their hard work and talents have been recognised.
‘This is a day to celebrate our students’ academic success but we also celebrate the mark they have made on this school in many other ways and we wish them well as they continue this journey at university and beyond.’
