Year 1 provides a wonderful opportunity to build on skills and knowledge gained in the Early Years Foundation Stage. We begin the year with a term designed to provide an effective transition between Reception style learning and a more formal day, focused around the Cranwell Curriculum.

Here are Year 1 on their first day exploring their new Learning Theme, how to be a hero!

Skills and learning objectives across the curriculum are taught in a variety of exciting ways as each term the girls are immersed in a theme linked to their interests.

Each term offers exciting opportunities for trips to enhance learning. In the Autumn Term, these range from going back in time to Number One Royal Crescent or Farleigh Hungerford Castle, to The Egg Theatre to perform in the Infant Nativity. In the Spring term, the girls put their IT skills to test by going out into the world around us and creating their own movies to present. In the Summer Term, the girls dived below the sea as well as winding their way along rivers to learn more about the importance of water.

Every week, the girls from Reception and Year 1 enjoy an outdoor learning activity together, which could be anything from building animal homes to creating large-scale artworks. Year 1 also enjoy a link activity with Year 2, such as Art or engaging in ‘I love’ skills. The girls also love to spend time each week with a friend in the Prep, ‘Book Friends’.

Enjoying time with Book Friends

There is a continued focus throughout the year on our school ‘Learning to Learn’ skills with activities that promote thinking about each other, working as a team, resilience, and independence.

Creative Arts and sports are also very important in Year 1. The girls love to take part in the Infant Nativity Performance as well as planning and performing in a class assembly. Every week, Ballet, Drama, and Music specialist lessons excite and enthuse the girls. They become confident, independent swimmers during Year 1 and we all look forward to the annual Sports Day.
