On Saturday afternoon Royal high school cross country runners ran for the first time in the Downside cross country trophy. Other schools competing included Clifton College, Kingswood, Canford, Lewiston, King’s Bruton, King’s Taunton, Taunton, Bryanston, Monkton Combe and Sherborne. We had runners from year 8,9 & 10 competing as one team as the inter-girls. Our team comprised of Sophie Moore, Clemmie Gallan, Lottie Silverton, Evie Butterfield, Adriana Crespo, and Ruby Butterfield. Ruby, Lottie and Evie have all played Netball for their respective victorious teams and had changed out of their trainers to put on their spikes secured in place with lots of electrical tape, as the course was very wet and very muddy!
With some outstanding runners From all over the South West competing it was going to be an interesting challenge and a good benchmark for the girls in preparation for the Avon County XC Championships next weekend.
My only coaching advice was to work together as a team!
Over a 4.4km course, it was going to be a good leveller and to our surprise and delight, Sophie finished strong up the last hill securing a well deserved 1st place. With Lottie not too far behind coming in 4th, Clemmie in 7th and Evie finishing strongly in 9th. The top 4 counted for the team competition but Ruby came home in a very respectable 21 seeing as she was running against girls 3 years older!
To our complete amazement, we had beaten the race favourites Sherborne Girls and Lewiston and secured our first team win for the season.
Sophie’s victory individually was awarded a very impressive cup and the 4 team runners a well-deserved medal!
An incredible start to the RHS Cross Country season and all bodes well to an exciting term ahead.
We wish Sophie, Lottie, Evie, Ruby and Emily all the best of luck at the County Championships on Saturday.
