Kate Richardson-Walsh, OBE Opens New Astro at the Royal High School

04 十月 2017

Pupils at The Royal High School today had the chance to meet Olympic gold-medal winning hockey player, Kate Richardson-Walsh OBE, as she opened the refurbished Astroturf hockey pitch at the Senior School on Lansdown Road.

Mrs Richardson-Walsh was visiting the school as a speaker at the Girls’ Day School Trust Young Leaders’ Conference when she took time out to coach Year 7 girls and referee a penalty shoot-out with the 1st XI. She then officially opened the Astro with Ms Cheryl Giovannoni, CEO of The Girls’ Day School Trust.

Head of the Royal High School, Mrs Jo Duncan, said, “Hockey is an important part of our impressive and wide-ranging sports programme at The Royal High School. We are fortunate to benefit from ongoing GDST investment in sport and are proud of the ever-increasing level of talent displayed by our hockey players. I am delighted that Kate Richardson-Walsh has opened our new Astro. Her success is an inspiration to our girls to continue to develop their skills and dedication to the sport.”

Mrs Richardson-Walsh said: “I’ve loved being here today at the Royal High School and it’s been a privilege to officially open the new Astro pitch. The girls really did put me through my paces today. It’s clear that the future of hockey at the school is very bright!”

The school is looking forward to welcoming Mrs Richardson-Walsh back to Bath later this year when it hosts the GDST Hockey Tournament which will see 250 Year 9 girls from across 24 schools competing and enjoying the game over the weekend of 25-26 November 2017.
