There are few moments more enjoyable in this job than having the pleasure of watching old friends reunite after years apart. This took place on a grand scale on Saturday 9th September when 35 alumnae from the Royal School gathered at the entrance to our school to begin a very special reunion. This year, many of these ladies are turning 50 years old, and so wanted to get together to celebrate this milestone – and what a celebration it was.
Shrieks of delight, recognition, and excitement could be heard as the ladies welcomed each other – they could even be heard over the building work taking place at the front of the school! After a few group photos, including some with their old school tie and sweatshirt, we set off on a tour of school – possibly the largest single group to ever have toured the school in one go. Beginning with the newly refurbished boarding house, the ladies were astounded at how different the living accommodation is now and said how lucky the girls are to have such comfortable, warm and bright rooms. With each area of the school and each classroom, memories were awakened and stories of fun times were shared.
Time flew past and some sustenance was required before the tour could be completed. Over a delicious lunch, the group shared old photo albums and even had a look through an old school prospectus, which one of the alumnae had brought along. They chuckled at the description of the aspirations expected of the students in their day – a little different to today! The tour continued after lunch, and the group particularly enjoyed a visit to their old art rooms, now our stunning art department.
We had a wonderful time being part of this reunion and look forward to many more as the year progresses.
