Student success rowing Liv G

We are always so proud of our students' success, and wanted to celebrate one of Year 10 students, Liv Greenwell, a superstar rower in the making.

A member of Avon County Rowing Club, Liv is currently the National Junior Indoor Rowing Champion and holds the British Record in the same event.

Liv enjoyed some very impressive results from last year, which paid off hugely as she was moved up groups in the Olympic Pathway Development Academy- from group E to group D, this is judged on senior (23 year old) % to gold medal times as well as water and land skills, and ergo pieces. A huge bonus was that this promotion came with Liv's first piece of GB kit!

Other highlights from last year included:

  • winning the Women's Junior 14 1 x B Final at the Junior Interregional Regatta (JIRR) in April. The JIRR typically involves participants from across the country who self-divide into one of 12 regions. Competitors who make it to the start line of JIRR have already had to undergo a rigid qualification process to prove themselves the fastest in their area by way of time trial. They then form part of the broader regional team and race to be crowned nominally fastest in the country.
  • being undefeated in the Women's Junior 15 2x (as a Women's Junior 14) for the whole of regatta season except the British Rowing Junior Championships - where Liv and her partner came 11th nationally in the double, and Liv came 29th nationally in the single, racing up a year group
  • racing the Tideway for the first time at Pairs Head, and coming overall 6/20 against some very competitive crews,
  • being ready to race at Henley Sculls Head (the HRR Course), and - before the race was cancelled - being featured in Junior Rowing News previews for the first time! You can read the articles here and here!
  • and throughout this a collection of victories at small local races and erg pbs!

Commenting on her commitment to rowing, Liv said: "I love rowing because it's a great mix of a team and individual sport, and I love being outside on the water, especially seeing the sunrise on the water before school every morning!"

We love this quote from Liv as it clearly shows how much she enjoys what she does. She is as modest as she is talented, and works immensely hard. Well done, Liv - we wish you another wonderful year and look forward to discovering what 2024 brings for you.
