Last weekend, eight of our Year 12 students took part in a weekend of debate at BISMUN 2026 (Bath International Schools Model United Nations). Representing Turkey and Poland, they took part in lobbying, diplomatic debate, and discussion on issues such as the rights of women, gene-editing technology, the crisis in Sudan, and US actions in Venezuela, to name a few. On the final day of debate, they were able to debate and vote on resolutions for the current conflict in Iran.

Here are some of the girls’ thoughts on the event:

“My experience at MUN allowed me to understand and explore global issues and give me an insight into how diplomacy works. I represented the delegate of Turkey and debated international topics, from the Libyan conflict to the Occupy movement in 2011. I worked with other delegates to create amendments and collaborated to draft resolutions. MUN improved my public speaking, research, and critical thinking skills, while allowing me to learn more about international relations.”

“I really enjoyed participating in BISMUN over the past three days, as it gave me the valuable opportunity to speak with many other students from different schools who represented different nations. As delegates, we were able to share diverse but meaningful opinions on the various topics discussed throughout the conference.”

“I was part of the 2011 Historic Committee, where we had extremely engaging and detailed discussions on major global events that took place in 2011, including the Libyan Conflict, the Occupy Movement, and the Japanese Earthquake and Tsunami. Although my resolution was not chosen, I managed to raise three Points of Information and also delivered a speech going against a proposed amendment. Overall, I found the experience very enjoyable and rewarding, and I learned a lot from the discussions and debates.”

“I am grateful for the experience at BISMUN representing Poland in the Human Rights Committee and seeing how our generation approaches today’s global challenges with new perspectives.”

“Attending BISMUN was a very enriching experience because I got to be involved in real-world debate about global issues with other schools. MUN has allowed me to grow my confidence in public speaking as well as enhancing my critical thinking when learning about diplomacy.”

Well done to all the girls who took part.
