Bringing Latin to Life: The Cyclops win First Prize at Latin Play Competition
Senior School, Performing Arts, Classics

On Thursday 26th June, our students took part in the joyous Bristol Festival of Latin Drama, beating stiff competition from St Mary’s Calne, Badminton, Clifton College and Bristol Grammar School to bring home first prize. The event was a wonderful opportunity for students to deepen their understanding of Latin language and ancient storytelling in a fun and engaging way. Indeed, the overall standard this year was the highest ever, but Ada, Imogen, Bethany, Amélie, Flora and Olivia in Year 8 and Milly in Year 9 excelled and were deserved winners.
The judge from the Bristol Classical Association commented that the script was laugh-out-loud funny; the delivery was clear and expressive, the staging imaginative and all the sheep stayed in character throughout! We were therefore judged as clear winners.Â
The girls have really worked hard in their own time to bring the ancient myth of the Cyclops to life through drama, creativity, and teamwork. From learning their Latin lines off by heart to attending rehearsals at break and lunch times, they immersed themselves in every aspect of the production and showed real bravery and commitment. The competition encouraged not only linguistic skills but also confidence, collaboration, and public speaking—skills that will benefit them far beyond the classroom.
We are incredibly proud of our students. Competing in the Festival of Latin Drama has shown that learning Latin can be dynamic, expressive, and a great deal of fun!
