Science Week at Royal High Bath was a fantastic celebration of innovation, teamwork, and scientific thinking, with hands‑on activities running every day and opportunities for students across the school to stretch their curiosity.

We launched the week with an engineering design challenge. Students worked in teams to prototype, test, and refine their own paper aircraft before going head‑to‑head in a competition measuring both distance and speed. Designs ranged from sleek darts to imaginative wide‑wing gliders—proof that creativity and physics go hand in hand!

Across two days, students turned into forensic scientists to solve the case of a mysteriously poisoned teacher. They examined evidence, analysed samples, evaluated alibis, and pieced together clues using real scientific methods. Logic, teamwork, and a bit of detective flair led many groups to crack the case.

Our Year 13 chemists spent the day in the labs at Bath University, where they synthesised and analysed their own samples of aspirin. Working with university‑level equipment and techniques gave them an exciting insight into life as a chemistry undergraduate.

On Thursday, we were thrilled to welcome researchers from Team Bath Heart, who are racing to develop the world’s first fully functional mechanical heart for transplant patients. Their talk offered a fascinating look at biomechanics, medical engineering, and the future of life‑saving technology.

We wrapped up the week at the Senior School with a friendly competition: the House Science Quiz tested quick thinking and broad scientific knowledge, while our finalists represented the school brilliantly in the GDST‑wide STEM Spelling Bee.

Science week also took place at the Prep School, starting with a spectacular, high‑energy assembly, wowing the girls with explosive demonstrations that brought science to life in the most unforgettable way.

Later in the week, five Sixth Form students from Years 12 and 13 visited to share their own journeys into future careers in science, offering the girls a glimpse of where curiosity can lead. They also led hands‑on microscopy sessions, guiding the pupils as they explored a hidden world up close. The girls were captivated from start to finish and loved every moment.

Head of Science & Biology, Sinead Duignan said:
