Student Voice: Drumming up success, Jemima Y13

Sixth Form, Senior School, Performing Arts, Music

This week’s Student Voice features a standout performer in every sense, both musically and theatrically. Jemima, a regular in Royal High’s drama productions and a dedicated drummer, has just been offered a place at the Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts (LIPA), one of the most competitive and respected music institutions in the country.

Her passion for music, particularly drumming, began just a few years ago in Year 9. Now, it is her first instrument and the focus of her future. The student shared her thoughts on this exciting opportunity:

“I’m absolutely thrilled to have been offered a place on such a competitive course at a world renowned institution for music. The opportunities it presents are unique and incredibly valuable for gaining experience and building skills for a career in the music industry.

It has been a huge boost to my confidence. As a female musician, especially a drummer, you are often outnumbered and people can assume you are not as capable. Just yesterday, a stranger said to me, ‘You don’t look like you should be able to play the drums.’ That thought had never crossed my mind while at Royal High. Here, girls are encouraged to do anything and there are no limits.

There is no such thing as a ‘girly’ or ‘boyish’ instrument. That mindset is what has helped me get to where I am today.

I am really grateful to Royal High and to Mr Bradbury for all their support over the years.

It is such an exciting offer and I hope it inspires other young girls to play the music they love. I only started drumming in Year 9 or 10, and now it is my main instrument. Year 7 me would never have believed it!” - Jemima, Y13

Her success reflects the spirit of Royal High Bath—empowering girls to be bold, creative, and ambitious. We are proud to celebrate her journey and the values that helped shape it.
