Taking Flight: Royal High School Bath Launches Groundbreaking Flying Club

Royal High School Bath is thrilled to announce the launch of the Royal High School Bath Flying Club, a bold and inspiring addition to our RHB Active extracurricular programme. Open to students in Years 7 to 13, this unique club offers a rare opportunity to explore the world of aviation through a dynamic blend of theory and hands-on experience.
In partnership with British Young Pilots (BYP), the club delivers a 10-week term of weekly sessions led by a qualified BYP instructor. Each session is split between engaging theoretical instruction, covering topics such as physics, meteorology, navigation and engineering, and practical flight simulator training.
Students will also have the opportunity to take to the skies with two real aircraft flights per term, applying their learning in a thrilling and unforgettable way. For those who wish to go further, the club offers a structured pathway toward passing civilian pilot exams and for the most committed, the chance to leave school with a Private Pilot Licence (PPL).
What Students Can Expect
- Weekly sessions combining aviation theory and simulator-based flight training
- Two real aircraft flights per term
- Instruction from certified BYP pilots
- A curriculum that supports STEM learning and builds confidence
- The opportunity to work toward a civilian pilot’s licence
This is more than just a co-curricular activity, it’s a launchpad for ambition. With women making up less than 15% of the aerospace engineering workforce and just 6.5% of licensed pilots in the UK, the Flying Club empowers our students to challenge expectations and take the lead in a traditionally male-dominated field.
At Royal High School Bath, we are proud to offer opportunities that inspire excellence, independence and aspiration. The Flying Club is a perfect example of how we help our students aim high, both figuratively and literally.
