Above Paws for Thought … Reflections on the first week at RHB Written by Mr Talisker and Joanna and Eleanor, Year 7

Wow!

We can’t believe that our first week of being new at Royal High Senior School has gone in flash! Thursday 4th was our first day at school with everyone else who was new to the School and Friday 5th was the first ‘real’ day when the whole school community returned. It’s fair to say we were all feeling a little nervous (okay, perhaps very nervous!) but also super excited to start and it has been amazing! At first we were worried about getting lost, but everyone has been so kind and welcoming, it feels like we’ve been here for ages.

First impressions …

Joanna: My favourite things have been lunch – the food is really yummy, there is so much choice and I have tried things I would never have eaten before!

Eleanor: Everything is really fun! My teachers are really nice, and my lessons are enjoyable. I especially love Drama as I like to move around.

Mr Talisker: The school is beautiful and I love walking the grounds. I might be small but I have had a super welcome from everyone I have met thus far; it’s been a week of new smells and lots of happy tail wags. I’m here to help everyone feel calm, confident and cuddled if and when they need it.

Finding our feet (or paws!) …

Joanna: I love having the freedom to walk around the school as I like. I feel so grown up not having to ask permission – it’s cool!

Eleanor: I feel the same! I love wearing my lanyard as it gives me the freedom to explore the school – and I don’t have to remember codes to get through doors!

Mr Talisker: Everyone has been very gentle with me, which I appreciate – starting school can be just as scary for a puppy as it is for people! I also think a few students might need some reassurance so I am trying to offer a comforting eye and help them feel brave (I also think the cookies at breaktime may have helped!).

Looking Ahead …

Joanna and Eleanor: We are both really excited about all the different clubs AND getting our devices! We are also both auditioning for Oliver (Joanna for dancing and Eleanor for acting) and we also can’t wait to spend more time with our Big Sisters who are in Year 8.

Mr Talisker: I’m excited to meet even more students and maybe visit a few clubs (especially if snacks are involved…). I’ll be working on my puppy training (I can already do sit, stay down and paw) and practising being confident in busy places.

Final Thoughts…

Joanna: Everyone is kind, I am making friends and I am very excited to be here.

Eleanor: We’ve only been here a week but it already feels like home. Bring on the rest of the year!

Mr Talisker: To all the students – big or small, nervous or excited – I’m here for you with waggy tails and warm hugs. Let’s have a paw-some year together! Oh, and good luck if you are playing hockey this weekend!
