Oliver!

Sixth Form, Senior School, Performing Arts, Music

Day 1 Previews 1

As Head of Drama, I could not be prouder of the extraordinary performances our students delivered in this year’s musical, Oliver!. Each cast member brought a depth of character, boldness, and commitment that lit up the stage night after night.

At the heart of this musical lies a woman whose courage burns through every scene she enters. Nancy is not a heroine shaped by privilege or comfort; she is a survivor of poverty, manipulation, and violent circumstance. Yet even in the darkest corners of Dickens’ London, she refuses to let fear be the only voice she hears. She risks everything to protect a child who has nothing, asserting a dignity and strength that society never intended her to possess.

As I reflect on her journey, I cannot help but think of the remarkable young women of Royal High Bath. They are determined, and ambitious, qualities that echo Nancy’s own spirit. But while today’s girls have opportunities to lead, to speak, and to imagine futures of their choosing, Nancy lived in a world where women were granted none of those freedoms. Hers is not the bravery of someone with choices; it is the bravery of someone who forges a voice where none was permitted. The moment she chooses to defy the forces around her to save Oliver is not merely an act of kindness it is an act of rebellion and we continue to champion agency, amplify the female voice, and challenge assumptions about what leadership, integrity, and courage look like.

This year’s production enabled an incredible 126 students to take part, each contributing to a show that grew far beyond our expectations. Our dancers flourished under the passionate and imaginative choreography of Mrs. Charlotte Hough, whose work not only shaped the movement onstage but created a joyful, empowering space for our students.

Our full student orchestra under the musical direction of Mr. Mark Bradbury showcased exceptional talent across an impressive range of instruments, bringing the score of Oliver! to life with professionalism and heart.

Backstage, the engine of the production was entirely student-led. Under the expert guidance of our theatre technician, Mr. Scott Jerram, and visiting technician, Mr. Finley Bradley, students took leadership roles in costume, microphones, props, sound, and lighting. Their precision, teamwork, and dedication ensured the production ran with remarkable smoothness and skill.

Performing Arts at the Royal High School offers students far more than a stage. It is a place to develop confidence, collaboration, resilience, and self-expression, qualities that carry into every aspect of their lives. Oliver! was a shining example of what can be achieved when young people are trusted, supported, and inspired.

I am immensely proud of every student involved. Their passion and professionalism were truly unforgettable – I can’t wait for next year!
