Ten Tors: Behind the Scenes of an Extraordinary Achievement
Senior School, Sport

This weekend, our students achieved something remarkable. They completed the Ten Tors challenge, finishing at 2:46 pm, despite an injury that required one of the girls to be airlifted off the course. While they beat the school record in practice, they were slightly slower in the actual event due to this setback. However, what’s truly impressive is that they pushed through these challenges and went on to finish the event, demonstrating incredible perseverance, resilience and teamwork.
The team started their day early at 5 am on the Saturday, greeted by the sound of Chariots of Fire blasting across camp, setting the stage for an unforgettable challenge. This achievement is the result of months of hard work, dedication and resilience, from the students themselves and from a staff member who has guided them every step of the way.
Mr Hardcastle leads the Ten Tors team with incredible commitment. From organising logistics to supporting training weekends and being out on Dartmoor himself, he gives his time generously to ensure the girls succeed. One parent shared:
“He not only inspires and challenges but he trains the girls so thoroughly and believes in them so much... they feel brave enough to really push themselves.”
The team faced Dartmoor’s unpredictable weather, long distances and demanding conditions. Despite the challenges, they finished with a sense of accomplishment that can't be taught in a classroom.

“ This experience didn’t just build resilience... it built young women who believe in their own strength.”
The impact on the girls hasn’t gone unnoticed, as one parent reflected:
“As a parent, I feel incredibly grateful that my girls had the opportunity to be part of his team... a journey that shapes confidence, courage and character.”
Feedback from the Dartmoor Search and Rescue Team – Plymouth highlighted the girls’ professionalism and determination when dealing with the events that led to one of the team members needing to be rescued. A volunteer shared:
“The team followed all the required procedures correctly and with enthusiasm... They were one of the nicest teams I’ve ever come into contact with in my 15 years of volunteering at the event... I was delighted to see them complete the event, and I’m sure it was their determination, ability and teamwork that carried them across the finish line.”
We are so proud of every student who took part, and we’re incredibly thankful for the staff who make experiences like this possible. Their efforts go far beyond the classroom, and the difference they make is lasting.
Congratulations to the whole team!
