British Science Week 2023

We had a fantastic week across the school celebrating all things Science, to mark British Science Week.

The Prep school Science Week started off with a BANG with Mr Hardcastle and his chemistry show for assembly. The colourful explosions and interesting facts left everyone feeling inspired.

A group of year 6 girls attended a special GDST science day at the Royal Institution in London, with presentations from female scientists, DNA extraction in the lab, tour of museum, engineering car crash challenge, messy science show in the theatre.

Other Prep school science fun included Y1s watching a live show by the NFU on How tractors are connected to space, a singing assembly with fun science songs with mrs millard, a bubble making break time session with year 1s – making and joining bubbles on the tables in Discovery Room, lots of fun science activities testing strength of magnets, building tallest towers from newspaper and masking tape, making gloop, investigating how many drops of water you can fit on a 1 pence coin, building geometric shapes with magnets, and much more!

In the Senior School Students in Year 7 took part in the first GDST wide STEM Spelling Bee, houses competed to be crowned Science champions in the house quiz (Well done Bronte!) and girls raced against the clock to escape from B1 by solving puzzles, navigating tasks while wearing upside down glasses and determining the blood type of unknown individuals. An impressive winning time of 12 minutes was set by Year 7! Students in Year 8 also raised over £50 for Comic Relief in their Chemistry Cake Sale. Well done to all who got involved.

We also welcomed several inspirational speakers throughout the week. In the Prep Dr Jessica Gwyther gave a talk on her career in science and engineering and all the places in the world she has worked and Mr Simon Masters talked to Y6 about flying taxis and drones, an area he is researching and developing. Mrs Meisner – microbiologist spoke to Y2 about good and bad bacteria – using a machine to see bacteria on their hands and discussing how to wash hands effectively. Mrs Grierson spoke to Y4 about her careers as an engineer. Over in the Senior School James Choulerton, a Consultant Stroke Physician at the Royal United Hospital Bath ran an interactive session for Year 11/12s interested in a medical career, discussing medical ethical issues and his career as a doctor and what to expect in medical interviews.
